CASE. Bridgestone tire company Although there are more than 100 tire manufacturers worldwide, a few companies are accounting for a larger portion of global sales. This sales concentrations has occurred because automobile manufactures prefer to place large orders with a few tire suppliers for the original equipment market(OEM) and to offer replacement tires on the same brands wherever they sell cars. Moreover, the market has been demanding high-tech tires that provide better handling and more durability, which cost more to make than regular tires. Only those companies with high sales can effectively recoup the development costs. One major means of increasing sales has been for companies to acquire other companies. Map 8.1 shows the major acquisitions by the largest tire manufacturers.
